History

The Housing Advocacy Council (HAC) of Monterey County began meeting to exchange information and solutions to the housing problem in Monterey County in March 1983.  We became incorporated in January 1984 and received non-profit tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Franchise Tax Board in November 1986. While we are not affiliated with any parent organization, we became a United Way funded agency in 1994. The HAC began providing direct services in March 1987 with the Security Deposit Guarantee Program. In 1992, the Housing Advocacy Council expanded its programs to include the Emergency Rent Payment Program, and in 1994 the Community Education Program.
